5th FrenchBIC school on methods for studying metals in chemistry-biology: november 16th-20th 2026 in Grenoble

Cette école thématique CNRS MetBio sera organisée à Grenoble du 16 au 20 novembre 2026 sous l’égide du FrenchBic, et conjointement par l’Institut des Métaux de Biologie de Grenoble (IMBG) et le LabEx Arcane.

L’école, qui se déroulera en anglais, accueillera 52 jeunes chercheur·e·s (du doctorat aux premières années suivant un recrutement en tant que chercheur·e/ingénieur·e). La formation se déroulera sous forme de cours et de travaux pratiques dédiés aux méthodes d’étude des métaux en chimie-biologie. Elle a pour objectif d’initier les participant·e·s à de nouvelles techniques et de les aider à mieux appréhender les paramètres spectroscopiques, la réactivité, ainsi que les propriétés structurales et électroniques de leurs objets d’étude.

Le nombre limité de participant·e·s permettra l’organisation de travaux pratiques en groupes restreints, et favorisera les interactions entre enseignant·e·s et participant·e·s. La participation des jeunes chercheur·e·s est encouragée par des tarifs d’inscription préférentiels. Les personnels employés par le CNRS pourront, par ailleurs, bénéficier de la prise en charge complète de leurs frais (incluant hébergement et transport) par la formation permanente.

This CNRS MetBio thematic school will be organized in Grenoble from November 16 to 20 of 2026 under the aegis of FrenchBic, and jointly by the Institute of Metals in Biology of Grenoble (IMBG) and LabEx Arcane.

The school will be held in English and will host 52 early-career researchers, including PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and recently recruited researchers, engineers and technicians. The training will consist of courses and hands-on practical sessions dedicated to the methods of studying metals in chemistry-biology. It aims to introduce participants to new techniques and to help them gain a better understanding of the spectroscopic parameters, reactivity as well as the structural and electronic properties of their systems of study.

The small number of participants will make it possible to organize practical sessions in small groups, and to foster interactions with instructors throughout the school. Reduced registration fees will be offered to PhD candidates to encourage the participation of young scientists. CNRS employees can benefit from full coverage of their costs (including accomodation and transport).

Le Chateau de la Commanderie, hotel restaurant spa ***,  will welcome you at the gates of Grenoble. The venue, pleasant and relaxing, is the right place for discussions.
Practicals will take place in the laboratories of CEA, CNRS and UGA.

Public transport from Grenoble train station to the location (35 min):
Take bus C1 direction “Meylan, Maupertuis” > get off at “Docteur Martin” (4 stops) > take the bus C4 at the same stop, direction  “Eybens, Le Verderet” > get off at “Le Bourg” (14 stops) > 4 min walk to Avenue de Bresson.

Program

Arrival: Monday 16th, welcome coffee (provide your personal lunch) between 12.00 and 1.30 pm. 1st lecture at 1.30 pm.
Departure: Friday 20th, after 3.00 pm.

Registration fees
  • CNRS employees 0 € (full coverage of their costs – contact your CNRS delegation to cover your transportation costs)
  • Non-CNRS PhD student or post-doc 360 €
  • Other public research employees 450 €
  • Private companies 800 € (discount applied for sponsors)

These fees include course, accommodation in twin rooms and full board from Monday, November the 16th afternoon to Friday, November the 20th at lunch.
CNRS employees must contact their local delegation for declaring the mission in order to cover their transportation costs.

Steps of registration:

  1. Registration between March 2nd and May 4th.
  2. To validate your registration, you will receive an email prompting you to finalize your registration through the Azur Colloque application, which requires payment within 3 weeks.
    The registration, accomodation and transport are free for CNRS employees. Select “CNRS Agent – cost 0€” on the app.
  3. You may pay by purchase order only if you belong to a French lab. You will be asked the name and email of your financial secretary, who will receive further instructions to proceed with the money transfer.
    NB: CNRS credit cards cannot be used to pay this registration.
    – Foreign participants must pay by credit card. Ensure you have your card details ready to complete the payment process. Your registration will only be confirmed upon receipt of payment.
    – By money transfer, label it with your name and the name of the school (Metbio2026).
    Non-refundable registration fee unless visa is denied or for justifiable medical reasons.
  4. Upon successful completion of the payment step, you will receive an email confirming your registration.
