Hydrogenase Lecture Series – Replay

March 3rd, March 24th, April 21st, May 26th, Oct 22nd

Dear hydrogenase community and metalloenzyme lovers, 

We are sorry we won’t be able to meet in person this year for the Hydrogenase Conference in Walla-Walla. However, ‘the show must go on’ and it is important to continue sharing science and stimulating discussion among the community. 

Therefore, James Birrell (MPI-CEC, Germany), Sven Stripp (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany), Gustav Berggren (Uppsala University, Sweden) and myself (University of Oxford, UK) came together to organise a Hydrogenase Lecture Series in an online format. 

We will have one Lecture per month, and it will take place the last Thursday of the month via Zoom at the dates/times indicated below. The format will consist of two back-to-back talks of around 20 min plus 10 min discussion each. Later this month, we will have an exciting talk from a real legend in the field: Prof. Michael W. Adams from University of Georgia. In subsequent months, we will have back to back speakers from a mixture of established PIs, early career researchers and young investigators.

We are delighted to share the terrific programme we have put together for the first three months (February, March and April).

Opening Lecture: Thursday March 3rd – 10:00 (PST)/13:00 (EST)/19:00 (CET) 

Prof. Michael W. Adams (University of Georgia, USA). Title: Structure and function of an electron bifurcating NiFe-hydrogenase.

Second Lecture: Thursday March 31^th

Prof. Carole Duboc (Université Grenoble Alpes, France). Title: Bio-inspired NiFe and FeFe catalysts for H2 production: from homogeneous to heterogeneous catalysis

Dr. Sam Cobb (University of Cambridge, UK) . Title: Using enzymes to understand and control the local environment of catalysis

Third Lecture: Thursday April 21^st

Prof. R. David Britt (University of California, Davis, USA). Title: ‘Enzymatic synthesis of the organometallic H-cluster of [FeFe] hydrogenase – HydG radical chemistry and the first steps’ 

Prof. Thomas B. Rauchfuss (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA). Title:  ‘Synthetic complexes in the study of the biosynthesis of [FeFe] hydrogenase’  

Fourth Lecture: Thursday May 26th^th. 

Prof. Iftach Yacoby (Tel Aviv University, Israel). “Using hydrogenase to hijack photosynthesis”

Associate Prof. Chris Greening (Monash University, Australia). “An oxygen-insensitive, quinone-transporting hydrogenase enables bacteria to extract energy from air”

Dr. Bonnie Murphy (Max Plank Institute of Biophysics, Frankfurt -Germany-) “Structures of the formate hydrogen lyase (FHL) complex from E. coli”

Prof. Dr. Ingrid Span (Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen -Germany-). “Structural insights into catalysis of the [FeFe] hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ”

Speaker 2: Ms. Marion Jespersen – PhD Candidate (MPI for Marine Microbiology, Microbial Metabolism group, Bremen, Germany).
