From my Predoc stay and PostDoc in Toulouse I have started using more and more techniques useful in Bioinorganic chemistry, and as in some of them, such as EPR or electrochemistry, I have acquired relative experience, I am still lacking some theoretical knowledge.

I would also like to learn more theoretical chemistry, for example, because I think it is a really interesting field and can very well complement several experimental data.

Bioinorganic chemistry is a field of chemistry which is not well covered during undergraduate studies, at least in my case, so it is important to take extra formation courses like this to keep learning.

My name is Martino Benvenuti and I am working as a chemists PhD student in the group of Christophe Lèger under the supervision of Sebastien Dementin.

The goal of my scientific project is to characterize the carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODHs) of Thermocuccus AM-4. CODHs are metallo enzyme whose chatalytic properties are hardly understood as well as the biogenesis of the several metallo-cluster that are fundamental for the catalysis.

Attending your summer school will be a great opportunity for me. I will have the occasion to deepen my scientific knowledge in inorganic chemistry and in the chemical techniques that are required for a better understanding of a metallo-enzyme like a CODH. Finally, I will meet other PhD students with whom will be interesting to share ideas and hypothesis.

Je suis étudiant en première année de thèse au LCBM (CEA Grenoble). Mon sujet porte sur l'utilisation de radical-SAM et donc leurs caractérisations. Je devrais donc analyser à un moment des spectres RMN, RPE et Mössbauer, de ce fait cette formation correspond exactement à l'apprentissage des outils pouvant m'être utile durant ma thèse. De plus je trouve vraiment le côté pratique de cette formation très intéressant pour l'apprentissage des techniques.

By participating in this summer school, I'm hoping to get an idea of the array of solutions available to characterize metals in both living and bio-inspired systems. I've reached a point in my PhD when the characterization of our bio-inpired systems and their intrinsical differences or similitudes with Nature's systems has become crucial. Fine understanding and characterization is the next step towards valorisation of our work.

Mon projet de thèse porte sur la synthèse et l’étude de complexes modèles d’une enzyme : la Nickel Superoxyde Dismutase. Notre stratégie consiste à utiliser des ligands pseudo-peptidiques afin de reproduire une structure similaire au site actif de l’enzyme. Je suis donc amené à utiliser la RMN, la RPE, la spectrométrie de masse, la spectroscopie d'absorption X et l’électrochimie afin de caractériser mes complexes, mais aussi le stopped flow pour étudier leur activité catalytique. Cette école me permettrait d’approfondir mes connaissances sur ces outils d’analyse et d’en découvrir de nouveaux qui pourront être intéressants pour mon projet situé à l’interface entre la chimie et la biologie.

Je suis étudiante en première année de thèse. Mon sujet porte de manière globale sur les réponses des mitochondries aux irradiations X, avec une partie axée sur l’utilisation de molécules couplées à des métaux et qui auraient des effets potentiellement radiosensibilisants. Les techniques qui seront abordés me permettront, d’une part, de répondre à certains questionnements dans le cadre de ma thèse. Parmi les questions envisagées, la localisation des éléments métalliques et / ou leur quantification constituent des aspects importants. Les approches mises en œuvre seront basées sur des techniques d’ICP-MS et/ou de nano SIM et seront réalisées en prestation ou en collaboration avec d’autres équipes. D’autres parts, ces techniques seront, pour moi, de nouveaux acquis pour la suite de mes projets professionnels.

I am currently a first year Phd student in CEA Saclay working on the field of photocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction as part of artificial photosynthesis. Our group employs biomimetic approach in developing supramolecular photocatalysts inspired by natural photosynthesis. As the field of CO2 reduction is new to our group because much attention was focused on water oxidation, I am deeply motivated to explore and understand catalytic activities of natural systems toward reduction of CO2 in order to develop novel photocatalysts. The study of metal active sites in biological systems is then apt to pursue such goal. Most impotantly, the summer school would be very beneficial to equip me with necessary technical skills and know-how to progress on the field.

My research interests concern the field of Bioinorganic Chemistry, which I found fascinating for its highly interdisciplinary character that allows me to conjugate my interest in metal chemistry with the one in life sciences.
I gained experience in the synthesis and characterization of transition metal complexes during both Bachelor and Master degree thesis. Specifically, I characterized my new derivatives principally by UV-Vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy techniques. Futhermore I paid particular attention in understanding the mechanisms of action of selected metal complexes both through the evaluation of their biological activity in vitro and ex vivo, and through the study of the interaction of these molecules with DNA.
My Phd project aims at exploiting different biophysical, spectroscopical and biochemical techniques to characterize the biological activity of novel gold compounds with perspective anticancer activity, including the interaction with proteins and polynucleotides.
Therefore I’m really interested in improving my knowledge in methods that allow the study of metals in biological systems. The high level of the scientific programme together with the possibility of joining practical sessions render the summer school you offer really appealing to me. Moreover, I’m enthusiastic about the possibility of meeting young brilliant scientists and top professors that share the same interest in Bioinorganic chemistry, which would be a great chance for exchanging ideas and knowledge.

Actuellement en thèse, j’étudie l’activité catalytique de metallopeptides de cuivre bio-inspirés. Leur étude n’étant pas toujours aisée, de nombreuses techniques doivent alors être utilisées pour mieux comprendre leurs propriétés.

La summer school du FrenchBIC me permettra d’approfondir mes connaissances sur certaines techniques que j’ai pu utiliser ponctuellement et d’en découvrir de nouvelles. J’attends également beaucoup des « practical sessions » qui seront l’occasion d’échanger avec les enseignants. Les compétences ainsi acquises lors de la summer school seront d’une grande aide pour la poursuite des études.

I am a postdoc researcher investigating the electron transfer during photosynthesis which results through the formation of transitory complexes that involve the flavoenzyme ferredoxin:NADP+ oxidoreductase (FNR). Our group recently descovered the thylakoid membrane protein TROL that binds FNR. We hypothesize that the nature of TROL-FNR interaction is dependent upon the light regime and therefore dynamic. In addition, our recent and very preliminary results suggest that there may exist other proteins that interact with FNR.
In the light of our investigation, I strongly believe that I would benefit from the both theoretical and practical knowledge gathered attending FrenchBIC summer school.
Moreover, it would be an excellent opportunity for me to get to know people working within the same field of interest for possible future collaborations.
I see myself as a dynamic, creative and cooperative person and sincerely would be delighted if you will take my application into strong consideration.

Je suis doctorante au CEA/Grenoble au sein de l'équipe STEP de l'INAC. Mon sujet de thèse se porte sur la synthèse de nanoparticules fluorescentes et leurs utilisation en bio-détection. Cette école d'été m'intéresse particulièrement car elle me permettrait de découvrir et approfondir mes connaissances sur les techniques d'analyse des ions métalliques en milieu biologique, un aspect qui sera abordé au cours de ma thèse (nanotoxicologie, mécanisme de FRET). Comprendre l'interaction entre les nanoparticules et le milieu organique est fondamental dans ce cas.La thématique de l'école s'inscrit parfaitement dans mon sujet de thèse. Cela me donnera l'opportunité de rencontrer des gens qualifiés dans le domaine et clarifier quelques aspects du sujet.

I am working with the FeFe hydrogenase maturation protein HydF, and my PhD project including spectroscopic charachterization of the reconstitutied (HydF-[4Fe4S]) and the in vitro matured ("catalyst" - adt/pdt loaded) forms of these proteins.
My projects are also including questions about the coordination enviroment of the [4Fe4S] cluster, and it would be a great opportunity to learn about HYSCORE EPR and/or Mössbauer, because these are really powerful techniques to examine the coordination of the metals and the coordination enviroment. Another technique what I am really interested in is the electrochemistry, escpecially the spectroelctrochemistry (FTIR-electrochemistry), but I do not have "basic" electrochemistry backround.

I would like to express my interest in taking part this FrenchBic summer school. I am currently in my first year of PhD in the Laboratory of Biological Processes of Collège de France under the supervision of Prof. Marc Fontecave. Here I am studying an interesting class of enzymes: hydrogenases. My aim is to give a contribution for the understanding of their structure and reactivity.
Hydrogenases are a fascinating class of enzymes, able to catalyze the reversible reaction of protons reduction to hydrogen. The understanding of these metalloenzymes can lead to a rational design of efficient artificial systems for production of H2 as a carbon-neutral energy carrier.
As they contain metal cofactors different techniques can be used to study their behavior and structure; between those spectroscopy and electrochemistry are very helpful. A better theoretical and practical knowledge of these methods would allow me to have a deeper understand of the proteins I study and could give new ideas about how to approach unsolved issues. I see this summer school a great chance to learn a lot about interesting and extremely useful bioinorganic chemistry method. It is also a unique occasion to meet experts in the field all gathered in a single event.
I think I would learn notions that could be useful to other people in my group as well. Therefore, I would really benefit from this school.
I hope that with these few lines you can understand my real interest in taking part to the course.

I am in my 1rst year of PhD thesis studying the roles of some Fe-S cluster transfer proteins belonging to the chloroplastic and mitochondrial assembly machineries, using structure-function approaches.

I am a PhD student working on a project where the aim is to find new antibacterial drugs against a 4Fe-4S cluster enzyme, "quinolinate synthase". The strategy we use in order to design new inhibitors is to target a differentiated iron site of the cluster by finding molecules that will likely ocupy this active site. So all the inhibition tests are analyzed by different techniques all targeting this metallic center.
We use different spectroscopies and these are accompanied by docking studies.
I think that such a formation covers one of the most important axes of my PhD and I think that it would provide me an extremily enriching background to understand better the techniques I use and the results I obtain, as well as maybe get some ideas for further future studies.
